Early Academic Intervention
CSU San Marcos
Purpose Statement
A faculty-led academic early warning system to guide students toward support services early in their first term at the institution.Early Academic Intervention (EAI) is an initiative that CSUSM has been building since Fall 2019 but has been scaled to reach all first-time students in their first Fall term since the 2022-23 Academic Year. EAI is CSUSM’s faculty-driven early warning system, an intervention designed to solicit referrals directly from faculty in high-enrollment first-year courses (such as our first-year seminar course, first year composition course, and general education mathematics courses) and connect students to support resources within the first few weeks of their first term at the institution. Over the last two academic years, EAI has proven very accurate in identifying struggling students and providing support, with students who respond to EAI outreach persisting at consistently higher rates than non-responders. With increased funding, EAI is planning to address a significant financial barrier that contributes directly to student academic struggle in the first term: early access to our math courses’ digital textbook and learning platform.
