ENGAGE (Early Notification & Guidance for Academic Excellence)
CSU San Bernardino
Purpose Statement
To boost course success rates by leveraging Canvas data to identify students at-risk for failing and provide timely support.Institutions of higher education recognize the vital role of data analytics in improving student outcomes. Learning Management System (LMS) data, such as that from Canvas, provides crucial insights into student engagement and academic progress. At California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), we have leveraged Canvas data to develop a tool for academic advisors to identify at-risk students and provide timely support. Our approach involves creating a risk profile for each student, and utilizing campus system access, daily Canvas course grades, and engagement metrics. To enhance the efficiency of identifying at-risk students, we developed a comprehensive dashboard outlining risk indicators and available academic support structures for each student. This intervention is particularly relevant as 87% of all surveyed CSUSB undergraduates indicated they would want an advisor to reach out to them if they were to fall behind in any of their classes. This proposal outlines our methodology, impact, relevance, scalability, collaboration, sustainability, and dissemination strategies to replicate and scale this intervention within and beyond the CSU system.
